Then it was just a matter of walking up and down the stairs, again and again, nestling magnolia boughs and pinecones into the shimmering white garland, twisting the faux branches to secure. I spray painted the pinecones a metallic gold, then wired them to fresh magnolia boughs. Next, I added the ribbon, scrunching it into the garland until I liked the way it looked. I put this together over several days, first attaching the garland to the railing with zip ties, one of my favorite holiday decorating tricks.

In the past, I’ve used a pre-lit faux garland adorned with big bows on the staircase, but this year I wanted to do something different.Īnd I did have a truckload full of magnolia boughs and boxwood. I already owned this faux champagne garland and have used it before in the foyer. The garland covers the railing leading upstairs from our living room.
